Cost of 'the ring'

While I don’t like to discuss dollars and prices in my column I also feel the need to touch on this a little as it’s a question that we are often asked at York Jewellers.

Men who come shopping for engagement rings by themselves often have an idea in mind of what design they would like but when it comes to price they don’t really know what they ‘should’ spend. The main questions regarding price are, “How much does an engagement ring cost?” and “How much should I be spending?”. Many years ago this magical figure was determined by multiplying the gent’s monthly salary by three. I’m not sure if anyone uses that method anymore!

What you spend on your engagement ring is entirely up to you. It should be whatever you feel comfortable with and at York Jewellers we will offer you the best quality and value for your money.

Another query that we are often faced with is, “Will it cost more to have my engagement ring specially designed?”. The simple answer to this is no. Part of the service that we offer is to sit down with you and design the ring of your dreams.

We want you to truly love what you are wearing and we feel that you shouldn’t have to pay more just because what you want isn’t necessarily readily made up.

The beauty of jewellery design (and this is one of the things that I love about what we do) is that almost anything that you can think of is possible!

There are a couple of things that can change the price of a ring from something that you have seen in the cabinet. One is the detail in the ring and the other will be the diamond itself. If you are designing a ring with a lot of detail that will take many hours to craft, it can add a little to the price, which is only natural given the hours needed to complete it.

Metal can make a small difference in the price, for example going from gold to platinum. And of course diamond size and quality can too. As you go through the diamond specifications with our consultants you’ll be able to make a decision based on what you feel comfortable with.

You can book a consultation with one of our designers through our website at http://www.yorkjewellers.com.au/appointments.
