Idris in race against time

Prized Panthers recruit Jamal Idris is in doubt for Saturday’s season opener against Newcastle at Sportingbet Stadium.

While Idris has been named by coach Ivan Cleary in the side for the match on Saturday, the Weekender understands that he is now in extreme doubt to play despite positive news last week that his hamstring injury was unlikely to threaten his availability for the round one encounter.

Cleary has most likely named Idris to give him the opportunity to prove his fitness late in the week.

Probably the biggest surprise in the round one line-up was Brent Kite being named to start the match, with Sam McKendry named on a five man bench that also includes James Segeyaro, Nigel Plum, Tyrone Peachey and Jeremy Latimore.

Panthers team: Matt Moylan, Josh Mansour, Dean Whare, Jamal Idris, Dave Simmons, Jamie Soward, Peter Wallace, Brent Kite, Kevin Kingston, Tim Grant, Lewis Brown, Elijah Taylor, Adam Docker. Bench: James Segeyaro, Nigel Plum, Tyrone Peachey, Sam McKendry, Jeremy Latimore.
