Penrith is preparing to swelter through a 44-degree day tomorrow, with the predicted hot weather already forcing the cancellation of a number of events.
If the prediction holds it will be the hottest day of the year so far.
The Nepean District Cricket Association announced this afternoon that it would cancel all senior cricket matches scheduled for Saturday in the Penrith area, as well as surrounding areas.
“The NDCA has made this decision with the safety and welfare of all players, spectators and officials as its foremost priority,” the Association said on social media.
Meantime, Ripples Penrith has confirmed its splash park will be open for free tomorrow from 9am until 5pm, with capacity limits in place. The pools themselves will be closed.
Penrith Regional Gallery’s Story Time In The Garden will still go ahead, but will be moved indoors.
In good news for those keen for a run tomorrow, Penrith Lakes Parkrun will go ahead albeit with a late course change.
NSW Health Executive Director of Health, Dr Jeremy McAnulty, said people should take extra care tomorrow.
“It is important for people to know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and take precautions to keep themselves and their loved ones cool,” McAnulty said.
“If they can, they should also take the time to check on vulnerable and elderly neighbours and family to ensure their safety in the heat.”
While a cool change will come through late tomorrow, likely bringing with it a storm, it won’t be the end of the hot weather. Most of next week will see temperatures in Penrith hit the mid-30s, while a top of 42 is expected on Thursday.
