A massive power outage has caused chaos in Penrith this morning, with more than 6000 homes and businesses without power.

The Penrith CBD is hugely affected with Westfield, Penrith Court and Council among the key business centres forced to close.

Penrith, Jamisontown and South Penrith are the main areas affected. Endeavour Energy is saying power may not be restored until Midday.

There’s significant issues on the roads with lights flashing yellow at the Mulgoa Road and Jamison Road intersection, as well as Mulgoa Road and Batt Street.

The RMS says at least 22 other intersections in Penrith are blacked out.

Other lights across the region are also out including at Cranebrook on The Northern Road at Sherringham Road and at Werrington Downs on Dunheved Road at Greenbank Drive West.

The power outage follows a storm this morning with heavy rain lashing the area. Up to 50mm is expected to fall across Penrith today.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Severe Weather Warning for the wider Sydney area.
