It is his first season in the A-League and already Western Sydney Wanderer Aaron Mooy has been selected to represent the Socceroos in this week’s 2013 East Asian Cup qualifying tournament in Hong Kong.
22-year-old Mooy was the only player from the Wanderers chosen to don the green and gold and told the Weekender he was excited by the opportunity.
“It came as a really big surprise,” he said.
“All my teammates at the Wanderers were happy for me and congratulated me, which was good.”
Mooy grew up in Blacktown but started his professional football career in Europe.
As a youngster, Mooy was spotted by England’s Bolton Warriors and spent three years from 2008 – 2010 with them.
Mooy returned to Australia in June this year as one of the inaugural signings of the new football franchise.
“Training’s been really intense but everyone’s been up for it, which is good to see. I’m loving it though, it’s great.”
Mooy’s appeared in all of Western Sydney’s eight games this season.
