Legendary boxer and media personality Ray Wheatley, who called Penrith home, has passed away.
An Australian Boxing Hall of Fame inductee, Wheatley edited and published World of Boxing magazine for 21 years and held a number of media positions over the years.
He started his career as an amateur boxer in 1963, before turning professional six years later.
After his career in the ring, he became an official, commentator and media identity.
He received the Order of Australia Medal in 2008.
Known as ‘Sugar Ray’, he passed away yesterday at the age of 74 following complications after an operation.
Former Australian National Boxing Federation president John McDougall said: “Ray was a giant among men, not only in stature but in his very being as a man. A great family man and friend to all he will be deeply missed.”
