Sydney to mask up again after spike in COVID-19 cases

Masks will be compulsory indoors across all of Sydney until the middle of next week after a spike of COVID-19 cases linked to the Bondi cluster.

The new rules come into place despite the 12 new cases being largely close and household contacts of existing cases.

Initially only seven Local Government Areas were involved in the mask mandate, which was due to expire tomorrow night. It will now be extended by a week and include all of Sydney.

That means people attending shopping centres, retail outlets and indoor venues must wear masks. Masks are not required when eating or drinking, but frontline hospitality workers must wear them.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she believed the response was proportionate to the risk.
