There’s been confronting scenes at the site of a tragedy in Cambridge Gardens where a nine-year-old girl has been hit and killed by a truck.
The parents of the girl, who was riding a scooter when she was hit at the intersection of Boomerang Place and Richmond Road, rushed to the scene – breaking down as they learned she couldn’t be saved.
Paramedics were also hugging roadside, devastated by the tragic loss of a young life just weeks before Christmas.
The accident happened just after 4pm. The nine-year-old died at the scene.
Officers from Nepean Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is underway.
“She just took off on the scooter and went straight across the road,” a witness told Seven News.
“I don’t think he would have seen her because he had the green light.”
The Weekender understands a Penrith City Council truck was involved in the accident.
All southbound lanes of Richmond Road are closed in Cambridge Gardens.
Police remain at the scene tonight and will be for some time.
Route 677, 678 and 782 buses are also diverting away from Richmond Road, and are using Trinity Drive and Dunheven Road instead. Two stops are being missed.
Meanwhile, another nine-year-old girl was also hit by a vehicle this afternoon at Colyton.
She has been taken to hospital with a broken leg and abrasions, but is expected to make a full recovery.
