Police make second arrest in child sex investigation

Detectives investigating the allegedly horrific, historical abuse of children in a local boys’ home, have made a second arrest interstate.

Strike Force Eckersley was established by the Nepean Police Area Command in late 2016 following a series of complaints made to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

The team of detectives is primarily focusing on the alleged abuse of boys at the Daruk Training School at Berkshire Park between 1965 and 1985.

After months of inquiries, the strike force, supported by Queensland Police, today travelled to an address on the Gold Coast where they executed an arrest warrant on a 73-year-old man.

He was taken to the Southport Police Station and charged with six counts of ‘indecent assault of a male’; one count of ‘buggery’ and one count of ‘assault with intent to commit buggery’.

The man is expected to face Southport Magistrates Court this afternoon.

Strike Force Eckersley detectives will apply to have him face a New South Wales court at a later date.

It’s the second Queensland arrest for the Nepean officers.

A 67-year-old man was arrested in Brisbane in February this year.

He was extradited to New South Wales and faced Penrith Local Court on 19 historical charges including indecent assault on a male and buggery.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this investigation to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
