Two truck drivers have died in a horrific accident in Erskine Park this afternoon.
Just after 1.30pm today, emergency services were called to Lenore, Drive, Erskine Park, after reports two heavy vehicles had crashed head on.
Both vehicles caught alight following the impact.
Two people, believed to be the drivers, were located deceased at the scene. Police say it will still be a few hours before they are formally identified.
Their ages aren’t yet known.
Early investigations into the incident have led police to believe a truck carrying mixed goods was traveling in an easterly direction when it crossed over to the wrong side of the road and collided with a truck traveling in a westerly direction carrying bricks.
Chief Inspector at Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Simon Maund, described the scene of the accident as “horrific, chaotic and panicked”.
“Unfortunately when we arrived, we located a crash site… and two deceased drivers,” he said.
“We don’t have any idea at this stage why the truck crossed the road but we will be conducting a full canvas of the area.
Inspector Maund said speed could have been a factor, but police aren’t ruling anything else out yet.
“We can’t say speed was a factor but it is an 80km zone meaning a closing rate of 160km so it is possible a fair bit of speed could have caused the incident – we don’t know right now,” he said.
Officers from St Marys Local Area Command are still in attendance at the scene and have been taking witnesses’ statements this afternoon.
A crime scene has been established as police investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and how the two drivers died – if it was on impact or during the inferno.
“There will be two empty chairs at the dinner table tonight unfortunately,” Insp. Maund said.
The road is expected to be closed for a number of hours to enable examination of the scene.
Police are asking motorists to avoid Lenore Drive and the surrounding streets of Erskine Park Road and Wallgrove Road and take alternate routes home.
