Did you know more men die of cancer each year than women?
A shocking statistic has revealed that men are 84 per cent more likely than women to die of preventable cancers that are common to both sexes.
Australian women are said to be better off because they talk to their friends about their health and lifestyle choices, and they pop off to the doctor if they’re worried.
Men often don’t and are usually less inclined to talk freely about their health which can be very dangerous.
To help encourage local men to talk about their health, the Cancer Council is once again running their popular Penrith Darts Challenge which will see local business and individuals up against local cancer survivors to help raise funds and awareness to fight men’s cancer.
Taking place at the Tattersalls Hotel on Thursday, November 20 at 5pm, the Cancer Council Penrith Darts Challenge will see competitors raise money for the cause through sponsorships plus individual and team fundraising.
“The Penrith Darts Challenge is now in its second year, and the people we had involved last year really enjoyed it. We thought it was the perfect opportunity to spread the word about men’s health,” Cancer Council Community Programs Coordinator, Rodney Titovs said.
“The men’s health message can be a hard one to get out and that’s what we are trying to do especially in the greater western Sydney area.”
The Penrith Darts Challenge evening will be split up into two parts: a Celebrity vs Survivors Darts Challenge as well as a General Public Competition.
“This is not a men’s only event, women are most welcome to come along too with their partner,” Mr Titovs said.
“Sometimes it’s good to have women hear our messages for men because they can often deliver that message better to their loved one.”
A gold coin donation will be required to participate on the night with all funds raised through the Penrith Darts Challenge going towards research, support services and prevention/education programs for men’s cancer.
The Cancer Council are currently looking for competitors to take part in both competitions. For more information call 9354 2060 or visit nsw.cancercouncilfundraising.org.au/penrithdartschallenge.
