Sports clubs looking for a new home are being told to be prepared come September when Penrith Council will be calling for expressions of interest in several new playing fields that will be completed in the next two years.
And if Councillor Bernard Bratusa has his way, one of those playing fields might even have a synthetic surface.
Mugloa Rise and Jordan Springs are two of Penrith’s newest housing estates and construction is set to begin on much needed sporting facilities in these suburbs.
At the corner of Greenwood Parkway and Alinta Promenade, the Village Oval will include either two full size rectangular fields or one oval field with high quality light and an amenities pavilion.
There is also outdoor fitness equipment, a parkour area, sports court area, playground and a learn to cycle area.
Closer to the Northern Road in Jordan Springs, there will be another lit field near an all abilities playground. Cr Bratusa said there are opportunities to possibly have a synthetic pitch installed at one of the sites.
“Sport is the lifeblood of a local community and to me it is common sense for Council to examine every avenue when providing facilities for the residents,” he said.
“Councils such as Willoughby, Leichhardt, Sutherland, Gosford and Ryde have all embraced the value of synthetic playing fields.
“They are relatively low in maintenance and offer year round usage. There is nothing worse than telling a six-year-old they can’t play footy on the weekend because the field has been closed.
“I’ve asked Council officers to discuss the option of having a synthetic field as part of the Jordan Springs sporting fields package with the Lend Lease.”
Clubs will be asked in the coming weeks to submit an expression of interest in using the new fields.
