Getting to play your favourite sport at your own local ground every week is one thing, but getting to play it overseas against some of the world’s best nations is another.
12-year-old Billy Oldfield and 11-year-old Aaron Riley will experience just that when they represent NSW at the South East Asia U13 Baseball Championships in Singapore this October.
The NSW U13’s team is the only Australian team represented at the Championships where they will play against some of Asian baseball’s best countries including Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan.
This will be the first overseas baseball trip for the boys.
“It will be cool to play against other countries in front of big crowd,” Aaron said.
The boys are yet to brush up on their Singapore knowledge but do know a few interesting facts about the popular travel destination.
“I don’t know too much about Singapore except that you can’t chew gum or spit,” Billy said.
“We might be going to Singapore Zoo and Universal Studios whilst we’re over there, which will be fun,” Aaron added.
Billy and Aaron were the only Penrith players selected in the NSW side after recent trials involving other clubs around the Sydney metropolitan region. The pair didn’t expect to get in but are mighty glad they did.
“I’ve been playing baseball for two years and just love the enjoyment of the game as well as meeting new people,” Aaron said.
“I’ve been playing for six years because it’s just so fun,” Billy added.
The South East Asia U13 Baseball Championships will run from October 2-9.
