When 18-year-old Bonnie Flitcroft steps onto her first plane flight, she will only be up in the air for a few minutes before she jumps right back out again to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Ms Flitcroft came face to face with blood cancer when her Nan was diagnosed with ITP, a form of Leukaemia.
She watched as her loved one went through treatment, without knowing what she could do to help.
“You are just sitting on the sideline and you can’t do anything to help. You just watch them suffer and think, ‘what can I do?’,” she said.
“Nan got the help that she needed and she is fine now but I wanted to do something.”
After taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave, Ms Flitcroft learnt about the Sunflower Club and their skydive program. Although she has never even been in a plane before, Ms Flitcroft is preparing to skydive whilst wearing sunflowers for the organisation.
“I have never been in an aeroplane before! It is a bit exciting and a bit scary too,” she said.
Through the Sunflower Club, Ms Flitcroft will be raising money to be donated to help rural families “find the sunny side of life” as their loved one receives treatment for cancer.
“The Sunflower Club supports families by giving them emotional support and relocating them closer to treatment; it helps them to stay together which I think is really important,” she said.
Ms Flitcroft needs to raise $2,000 for the Sunflower Club before she can take part in the skydive. She will be holding a sausage sizzle on Saturday, August 3, at Officeworks Penrith and a fundraiser on Saturday, August 10, at Penrith Polercise.
