Penrith Council has been allocated Federal Government funding to fix the dangerous intersection of Doonmore and Stafford Streets in Penrith.
As part of the National Building Black Spot Program, Council will receive $180,000 to install a roundabout at the dangerous intersection.
Five year accident data shows there have been nine collisions at that intersection with three of those resulting in casualties.
Cr Karen McKeown said that thanks must be given to the Federal Government for the funding.
“It is also a timely reminder of the consequences if Councils are not recognised in the upcoming referendum,” she said.
“This funding may not be available to us in the future if local government is not recognised in the constitution.”
$40,000 has also been allocated through the program to install a raised island with an additional stop sign at the intersection of Canberra and Sydney Streets in St Marys.
“Both locations have a history of car accidents resulting in injuries and with this funding we hope to reduce the number of accidents and improve the overall safety of motorists, passengers and pedestrians travelling in these areas,” said Mayor, Mark Davies.
Federal Member for Lindsay, David Bradbury, was glad Council accepted the Black Spot funding.
“The Federal Labor Government has allocated more than $5.5 million to fix 26 black spots across the Lindsay electorate,” Mr Bradbury said.
“23 of these projects have already been completed.”
