State Penrith MP Karen McKeown says she is shaken after a car was stolen from her property last night, and later involved in a shooting with police.

The vehicle was stolen from her home in Leonay overnight.

About 12.10pm today, officers attached to the Cumberland Police Area Command were called to Lane Street, Wentworthville, responding to reports the stolen vehicle was at that location.

“When police entered an underground car park of a unit block, the stolen vehicle was allegedly driven at them,” a Police spokesperson said.

“Police discharged their firearms, injuring two men inside the stolen car.

“The officers immediately rendered first aid until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.

“The men were taken to Westmead Hospital where one is reported to be in critical condition and the second is in a serious but stable condition.”

The police officers were not physically injured. A critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad with the assistance of South West Metropolitan Region will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation is also subject to an independent review.

McKeown said she was shaken by the events.

“Last night my home was broken into, and my husband’s car stolen. I reported this to police,” she said.

“While I am shaken from the events, thankfully I am unharmed. I want to thank NSW Police, in particular the local area command at both Penrith and Cumberland Police for their prompt response.

“Political leaders often praise police for their bravery. Today, I have had a first-hand experience of this. I won’t be making any further comments at this time.”
