Warragamba Dam reaches capacity, begins to spill

Warragamba Dam has reached capacity and commenced spilling at around 3am this morning, Water NSW has confirmed.

The spill from the dam may continue for up to two weeks.

River users may notice a significant increase in river heights over this period.

It comes as Sydney prepares for a major deluge to hit today.

A Severe Weather Warning is in force with up to 120mm of rain set to fall today. Up to 80mm will fall tomorrow, an increase on initial predictions.

Sydney’s transport system is holding up as the morning peak progresses ahead of predicted destructive weather later today.

As it stands there’s no major delays on the rail network.

With rain falling across Penrith, motorists are being urged to stay on alert with conditions expected to worsen through the day.

Stony Creek Road at Shanes Park is closed in both directions, while other local road closures are also expected today.
