What is a Local Government Area?

A Local Government Area is essentially an area governed by a particular council. In Penrith’s case, the Penrith Local Government Area is managed by Penrith City Council.

If you pay rates to Penrith City Council, or your rubbish is collected by Penrith City Council, you’re in the Penrith Local Government Area.

Penrith is a suburb, and an LGA

Sometimes, when you hear something has happened in ‘Penrith’, it can be a little confusing as Penrith is both a suburb, and a city.

The suburb of Penrith has a population of just over 15,000. It incorporates the CBD and pockets to the east, west, north and south of the CBD.

The wider city, the Penrith Local Government Area, has a population of 212,966 according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Agnes Banks, Badgerys Creek, Berkshire Park, Caddens, Cambridge Gardens, Cambridge Park, Castlereagh, Claremont Meadows, Colyton, Cranebrook, Emu Heights, Emu Plains, Erskine Park, Glenmore Park, Jamisontown, Jordan Springs, Kemps Creek, Kingswood, Kingswood Park, Leonay, Llandilo, Londonderry, Luddenham, Mount Vernon, Mulgoa, North St Marys, Orchard Hills, Oxley Park, Penrith, Regentville, St Clair, St Marys, South Penrith, Thornton, Wallacia, Werrington, Werrington County, Werrington Downs.

Note: Some parts of Agnes Banks, Badgerys Creek, Kemps Creek, Luddenham and Wallacia are governed by other Local Government Areas.

How big is the Penrith LGA and what is the population?

The population of the LGA is estimated to be 212,977 according to latest Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates.

The Penrith LGA covers an area of 404.9 square kilometres.

Does the Weekender cover areas outside of the LGA?

Some of our content does cover other areas – particularly entertainment and sport (where a team represents Penrith, but doesn’t necessarily base itself here). However, in the main the Weekender’s content is restricted to the Penrith Local Government Area.

What State and Federal electorates sit inside the LGA?

The State seats of Penrith, Mulgoa and Londonderry all sit inside the Penrith LGA.

Primarily, the Federal seat of Lindsay covers the Penrith LGA, however some parts of the LGA are covered by McMahon and Hume.
