The Greater Sydney Commission will complete a strategic review of current and future cemetery and crematoria needs for western Sydney, the Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies has confirmed.

Mrs Davies said the review comes after concerns the Wallacia Golf Club could be transformed into a cemetery.

“I am pleased the Premier has directed the Greater Sydney Commission to complete a strategic review in consultation with the community and Council,” Mrs Davies said.

“I am calling on the Independent Planning Commission to pause their assessment of the Wallacia Golf Club Cemetery pending the outcome of the strategic review.

“I have been working with the NSW Government, Penrith City Council and local community members for the last 12 months to stop the proposal to turn our local golf club into a cemetery.”

Mrs Davies said there are other approved sites which are available for cemetery developments.

“I am now calling on the Independent Planning Commission to provide certainty to our community and urgently clarify it will wait for the Greater Sydney Commission to complete its review before making a determination on Wallacia,” she said.

“I never stopped fighting for my community to ensure the Wallacia Village and golf club was protected – even though at times it felt like a ‘David and Goliath’ fight.

“I want to thank my communty of Wallacia for their patience over these many months. I look forward to working with the Greater Sydney Commission, Penrith City Council and the community to ensure cemeteries and crematoria are developed in appropriate locations, following consultation and evidence”.
