Get up and get involved

I get to speak to a huge variety of people about their ideas on fitness in my line of work.

From such a broad range of people it’s surprising how similar the methods they think of for getting fit. Usually join a gym or go for a run, that’s great for many, but what if you’re the type that doesn’t really like either of those options?

Unfortunately, I often hear how the intention to get fit stays just that, an intention. As I have said before, the smallest deed beats the grandest intention. Why limit your options to an activity only based on getting you fit?

Look at the bigger picture, think of something that you could do and enjoy. Maybe make new friends, develop new skills. Gain confidence and experience. You can suit exactly your own interests and fitness level. Fitness becomes just one of a whole string of benefits you will gain. In a quick look this morning I found a diverse range of activities.

Anyone for Dragon Boating? I saw they are welcoming beginners at the Regatta Centre, and they range from juniors to Great Grand Dragons where the youngest paddler would be over 60. What a great way to get fit!

If that’s too easy for you, Blue Mountains Rugby Union Club welcomes new players. You get a trainer a couple nights a week and get to take the family to watch your skills on Saturday if you play a game.

And it probably costs less for a season than an official Wallabies supporter jumper. Not into teams? There is a new Krav Maga School called Krav West. Reality based self defence, some pretty serious activity combined with skill and coordination development.

That’s got to be better than pounding on a treadmill for an hour and learning nothing. If that all sounds a bit much maybe just getting out of the house is for you.

Glenbrook Toastmasters are doing a speechcraft course for beginners starting Wednesday, March 7.

Anything that gets you up and away from the lounge chair is going to have beneficial results.

There’s so much choice out there. Get up and get involved.
