Green Bin winner announced

The winner of the Green Bin Bloke’s ‘Do the Right Bin’ competition has been drawn, and not only is the winner a great recycler, he also encourages others around him to do the right thing and recycle right.

Michael Galea, from Kingswood, has always been an enthusiastic recycler so it’s no surprise he found the competition entry form easy to fill out. Because he knew exactly what items could go into each of the three bins and filled out the entry form correctly, he is now the proud owner of a brand new Piaggio MP3 Motor scooter valued at $10,000.

Michael says he is over the moon with his win, but still doesn’t believe it’s real.

“I’ve never won anything in my whole life, so when I got the phone call from the Mayor I actually thought it was one of my friends playing a prank on me. I haven’t got my motorbike licence yet, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Michael said.

“I have been recycling my whole life and it’s something that I will definitely be passing on to my kids. I’m really passionate about the environment and recycling to me just seems like such a simple thing that I can do to make a difference.”

Penrith City Mayor, Councillor Greg Davies, said the number of correct entries received was encouraging.

“Over 400 residents entered the competition and correctly identified what items can go into each of the three bins. This is a great result and goes to show there are many people in the community who are doing the right thing,” Councillor Davies said.

“Some common mistakes we still see include putting plastic bread bags, plastic containers with food inside, glass bottles and aluminium foil trays into the green bins. Often people only need to make minor adjustments to get their waste sorting habits right. But it’s these small, everyday changes that will ensure a cleaner, greener City both now and in the future.”
