Blak Douglas: The Halfway Line

June 20, 2026, 10:00 @ 10:00 AM - October 23, 2026, 19:00 @ 7:00 PM

Free

Penrith Regional Gallery presents a mid-career survey exhibition of acclaimed artist Blak Douglas, who grew up in Penrith and began his artistic path here. He went on to become one of the most recognised artists in Australia, winning the Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW in 2022 and gaining international recognition. This exhibition reveals drawings from his very early days as well as major works from different stages of his art practice including sculptures, posters and recent paintings.

For Blak Douglas, “The Halfway Line” refers to this point in his career, and also the geographic position of the river Dyarubbin (Nepean) in Penrith. This place was where he went to school, studied at uni and had his first exhibition in 1998; he later found inspiration east of the river as part of Redfern’s cultural and political community; and his studio is now based west of the river in Rylstone across the Blue Mountains on Dabee (Wiradjuri) Country.

This free exhibition is open to everyone – if you haven’t been to Penrith Regional Gallery right on the river, don’t miss it, there’s a great cafe too. Everyone is welcoming to Opening Night on March 22, and a free artist talk with Blak Douglas at 11am on March 23.
