December 3 marks the 20th anniversary of International Day of People with Disability and legally blind artist, Susan Oxenham will be celebrating with her own art exhibition of artworks that she has created over the years.
International Day of People with Disability is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote an understanding of people with a disability and encourages support for their dignity, rights and well-being.
It also seeks to increase awareness of the benefits of the integration of people with disability in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
“It is sometimes difficult for people to appreciate what life is like with a disability, but it is wonderful to receive this annual recognition,” said Ms Oxenham.
The Emu Plains artist has been painting all her life and uses acrylics and mixed media to create beautiful artworks that appeal to both visually impaired and non-visually impaired people.
“I am donating one of my works to the Special Children’s Christmas Party – a teddy bear that I painted with a hair brush to make it textured like fur,” she said.
Ms Oxenham uses textures to create works that not only look beautiful, but provide a sensory experience for people who are visually impaired.
“It is quite amazing that rather than my work deteriorating, I have improved and grown as an artist,” she said.
Ms Oxenham will also for the fourth time be featured in Vision Australia’s annual calendar with the work featured in that calendar on display at her gallery.
A number of works will be for sale and art enthusiasts can also pick up an order form for Vision Australia’s 2013 Calendar.
Her exhibition in celebration of International Day of People with Disability will be held at her studio located at 6 Barracks Street, Emu Plains on Sunday, December 2 from 12pm to 5pm.
