There could be an influx of people cycling around the area when Penrith City Council constructs a shared-use path along Mulgoa Road.
Council received $1.5 million from the RTA as part of the River Cities Bike Program for the second year of the NSW Bike Plan 2010 – a key part of the Metropolitan Transport Plan.
Council will be required to construct a concrete shared-use path along the eastern side of Mulgoa Road, extending from Jane Street to Jamison Road, with continuation of works up to the approved allocation.
An additional $50,000 has been set aside to install bicycle-parking facilities around Penrith.
In the first year of the plan, Council was provided with $1 million to put towards a shared-use path from Worth Street to the Great River Walk entry in Memorial Avenue, Penrith.
At a Council meeting on Monday, Councillor Robert Ardill said the path had been well received.
“We’ve got plenty of resources in this city. I’ve been riding along the Great River Walk. I don’t mind sharing that I’ve dropped 25 kilos by… discovering that,” he said.
While Councillor Jackie Greenow said the path along Mulgoa Road was needed, she called for a report back to Council to see if something could be delivered from St Marys to Penrith.
