A number of Penrith businesses have been impacted by a major nbn outage.

A critical nbn cable has been cut, with technicians scrambling to get services restored as soon as possible.

The cable was not cut by nbn crews and investigations are continuing into how it occurred.

The Weekender understands the cable break is 91 metres from the node. Technicians are working on an interim solution to restore services as quickly as possible.

It’s understood the work is so detailed that a Before You Dig Australia permit will be required as well as traffic management. Gas lines in the area will complicate the repairs.

Businesses impacted are in the Penrith CBD, mainly on Henry and High Streets.

“A cut to nbn cable by a third party in the Penrith area has resulted in a loss of services to around 130 premises,” an nbn spokesperson told the Weekender.

“nbn technicians are required to replace 80 metres of cable and get premises reconnected as soon as possible, however damage of this nature often requires civil works and traffic management which may take some days.

“It is important that people working around critical underground infrastructure are aware and check with Before You Dig Australia before starting work to avoid these types of incidents.

“The nbn outages page will have the latest detail of the outage and estimate times for restoration. We are sorry for any impacts the outages are having on those effected. We encourage those impacted to contact their service providers to discuss any other potential backup solutions while the repairs work take place.”
