Fire crews have returned control of a major fire scene in a scrap metal yard at St Marys back to its operators.

More than 50 firefighters, using 14 fire trucks, battled the blaze in the Christie Street premises for five hours until 11pm last night, preventing flames in 500 tonnes of scrap metal from spreading to nearby properties.

Employees from the recycling business assisted fire crews, using heavy machinery to disperse the burning piles of metal.

The fire produced a large cloud of black smoke, forcing firefighters to put on breathing apparatus.

Using three aerial appliances to attack the seat of the fire, crews eventually contained then extinguished the flames.

No-one was injured and the cause of the blaze has not been determined.
