For the past 25 years, Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea has brought together millions of Australians to share a cup of tea in support of those affected by cancer.

Hosting for the eighth year in a row will be South Penrith local Irene Johnson, who will be putting on a spread at her work on Thursday, May 24.

After battling cancer herself, Ms Johnson said that while she wishes she could forget her experience, she knows how important it is to keep fighting for a cure for others.

“It’s hard for me to do because you just want to move on in your world and don’t want to be reminded of it, but you do it because you’ve got to help others and hopefully find a cure,” she said

Having raised over $28,000 for the Cancer Council through the Biggest Morning Tea, Ms Johnson said it was always nice to see locals getting involved in a good cause.

“I’m just surprised how passionate and generous people are about it, there’s no hesitation in giving,” she said.

“They don’t have a problem donating and it’s just so heart warming to see that.”

Working for maintenance company BGIS located in Berkshire Park, Ms Johnson said the event each year wouldn’t be possible without the help from her co-workers.

“Some people do sandwiches, some do cakes, the guys just go to the shop and buy something because that’s easier for them, but everyone in the office gets involved, it’s definitely a team effort,” she said.

Starting at 7am and continuing on to lunch, the team have also put together a raffle with prizes donated from local businesses.

And while Ms Johnson admits she loves helping out a great cause, she said the event was also a great excuse to catch up with old friends over a cuppa.

“It’s a bit like weddings and things like that because you get to see people you haven’t seen for ages,” she said.
