A police officer remains in a critical but stable condition after he was shot during a dramatic scuffle at Nepean Hospital last night.
A critical incident investigation has been launched after the police officer and a security guard were injured following the confrontation with a man in the Emergency Department.
Police were called to the hospital just before 10.30pm last night, following reports a man was threatening a doctor with scissors.
During a struggle, a police officer lost control of his firearm. Subsequently, the police officer and a security guard were shot.
The police officer, named as 38-year-old Luke Warburton, suffered a gunshot wound to the upper leg.
The security guard suffered a gunshot wound to his calf.
“Both the police officer and security guard are currently undergoing treatment at Nepean Hospital,” a police spokesperson said.
“A 39-year-old man has been arrested and is currently assisting police with inquiries.”
A critical incident team from North West Metropolitan Region will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.
