A man has been arrested after an alleged assaulted with a rock on a train travelling towards Penrith overnight.
About 11.20pm last night, a 35–year-old man was travelling from Central Station to Penrith.
Witnesses have told police a man got on the train at Blacktown and sat behind the 35-year-old.
It is alleged the man made a number of remarks which the 35-year-old considered offensive.
A fight broke out between the pair where the 35-year-old was allegedly struck with a rock sustaining serious facial injuries.
Witnesses pressed the emergency alarm and then sought safety elsewhere in the carriage.
A 26-year-old man was arrested after running from the train when it stopped at St Marys Railway Station. He was taken to St Marys Police Station where he is assisting with inquiries. .
The injured man was taken to Nepean Hospital for treatment to suspected facial fractures.
Inquiries are continuing.
