A youth-based event that raises vital funds for cancer research is back in Penrith after a two year hiatus.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to celebrate, there’s been confirmation the ‘Help Fight the Boobie Monster’ party is back by popular demand. The area’s biggest dress up party of the year will be held on November 23 at the Peachtree Hotel.

The event is the biggest youth-based fundraiser in the local community, and is recognised as an official event for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, with every cent raised going directly to the NBCF in the fight against breast cancer.

To date, the ‘Boobie Monster’ parties have raised over $50,000 for the charity and this year’s dress up theme is ‘National Geographic’.

The ‘Help Fight the Boobie Monster’ party is an initiative of local twenty-somethings Kate Totman and Maeve Ryan, who have both lost their mothers to breast cancer.

Miss Totman believes that the party is a great initiative for young people to be involved in.

“It’s a great way for the younger people in our community to feel like they are actively involved and giving back to a great cause. And let’s be honest – it’s a very fun way of supporting a worthwhile cause,” she said.

Peachtree Hotel is donating the venue exclusively for the event and while event organisers expect over 500 people in attendance, they are remaining tight-lipped about some surprises that will make this year’s party bigger and better than ever before.

On average, 12 women across NSW are diagnosed with breast cancer every day, with 17 dying each week from the terrible disease. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women are being encouraged to be screened.

“It’s incredible to think that 90 per cent of these women do not have a family history – so it is important for all women to be vigilant with their breast screening,” said NSW Health Minister, Jillian Skinner.

“It is vital for all women aged between 50 and 74 to have a mammogram every two years at a BreastScreen NSW clinic. It is a free service that could save your life.”

Tickets to the event are $25. For information, visit http://www.facebook.com/helpfighttheboobiemonster.
