Penrith Council looks again set to oppose plans for the former Panasonic site on Station Street.

Owners of the vacant 7.8 hectare site opposite Howell Oval, Parkview Penrith, have been vying since 2008 to have the site become a mixed use, retail, commercial and residential space.

Originally, Penrith Council earmarked the site for high density residential space, and plans were approved for a hotel and 930 dwellings.

However, in November last year, Parkview submitted a new plan with substantially more retail and commercial space including a Masters Home Improvement store, citing the old plans were not financially viable.

Council objected to the proposal and Parkview has now submitted a revised plan to the Department of Planning for consideration.

A Council spokesperson said that a draft submission to the Department of Planning on the Parkview proposed concept plan will be discussed at the Ordinary Meeting on Monday, July 22.

“Council officers have recommended objecting to the project as it is contrary to Penrith City Centre LEP 2008,” the spokesperson confirmed.

The key elements of the plan remain the same; a 380 space car park, Masters store, retail space and 570 units in buildings up to 10 storeys tall.

However, where the Masters store was located at the southern end of the site, it has now been move to the northern end to be located closer to Centro Nepean.

Another significant change is the positioning of the plaza, ground floor retail and the tavern, which would now be located in close proximity to Ransley Street, near the Penrith Stadium and Showground.

The proposal sparked fierce debate when last considered by Council and will again be deliberated on Monday.
