Fines for ice cream truck crash

A man has been fined a total of $640 and disqualified from driving for six months after being involved in a serious crash last year.

On December 8, the Blackett man was driving a truck and trailer along a highway in Penrith with approximately 18 tonnes of frozen ice cream on board the refrigerated vehicle.

The man approached a turn in the road and went around the corner too quickly, resulting in the truck colliding with the side of the road.

The road was not useable for several hours while police and emergency services attended the scene. Because the man suffered a seizure, he was instructed by the hospital not to drive for six months.

The man suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, as was his passenger, who sustained lesser injuries.

The Blackett man was actually trapped inside the truck for a significant period of time before he could be taken for treatment.

He faced Penrith court on two charges; negligent driving and special category drink driving.

The vehicle he was driving required that the driver not have any alcohol in his system, however, the man after the accident had returned a reading of 0.038. He was given the minimum penalties given his driving suspension by the Hospital.

Meanwhile, an Irani man has been put on a good behaviour bond after driving without ever being licensed.

On April 1 local police stopped the man, who does not speak English well, and discovered that he did not hold a NSW licence. He had been in the state for two months.

On April 18 the Irani man obtained his learner’s licence.

The Court was told that the man had sought advice from an unreliable source that his Irani licence would be valid in NSW.

The court let the man off with a warning and the case was dismissed under section 10.
