NSW Staycation Tips for Sydneysiders Seeking a Respite from City Life

From its brilliant blue waterways to its hodgepodge of iconic Australian attractions, there truly is a lot to love about Sydney, especially if you’re from out of town and have a few days’ worth of free time up your sleeve. And if you live here, even better, as you can see Sydney as a local!

That said, sometimes you need a few days’ break from your home city, no matter how much you love it. A long weekend of cleaner air, birdsong instead of bus-song, and even just some good old pure silence can provide enough of a reset for most Sydneysiders before they start pining for their stunning city views again.

Enter the staycation. These aren’t about staying in your home, they’re about exploring your backyard. With fresh eyes. So if you’re a Sydneysider yourself who’s looking to leave the city bubble and explore Greater Sydney and more of regional NSW for a change, here are a few places you may like to go.

1. The Blue Mountains: Jewel of the West

If you’ve never visited the Blue Mountains, it’s going to feel like another world. Mornings thick with mist, gumtrees older than your family combined, cliff-top views that extend to the horizon. If you think we’re using ornate language for the heck of it, think again; the Blue Mountains will stun you in awed silence.

Aiming for seclusion? Try places like Mount Victoria or Blackheath over the more tourist-heavy hubs. Stay in a rustic cabin, stay in a secluded eco-lodge, it’s up to you. Just make sure you spend your days hiking Govetts Leap, before returning to log fires and local wines. Our tip: visit mid-week and soak up the serenity.

Pro tip: Sydneysiders who are looking to get into camping or caravanning will find the Blue Mountains to be the perfect destination. If this is your first trip, you can rent a caravan just for the weekend. And if you’re sold on making a trek to the Blue Mountains a regular tradition, then why not buy a caravan or look into caravan loans over shelling out cash on a rental every time.

2. Jervis Bay: Paradise of the South

First glance at Jervis Bay and you’ll be forgiven for thinking you arrived at the Whitsundays, instead of a town a few hours’ south of Sydney. The sand is that white, and the water is that turquoise. And yes, it is the perfect base for a Sydney weekend getaway and to slow down.

You have options here. Camping at Huskisson, strolling Hyams Beach (strolling any of the beaches, if we’re honest), even kayaking with dolphins. If we’re in charge, we’re choosing a caravan staycation for Jervis Bay as well. Why? Flexibility. There are plenty of holiday parks offering power, amenities, and, most importantly, beach access. Need we say more?

3. Book a Farm Stay in Orange

If you’ve just had your fix of the Blue Mountains but want to keep heading where the sun is setting, why not drive a couple more hours to the city of Orange? It’s going to have more of the same, and we mean that as a compliment. Delicious local wine, delicious local food, and cosy farm stays, often wrapped into one experience.

This is a real feet-up type of Sydney staycation. Yes, you can explore. But you can also kick back and chat the hours away somewhere like Philip Shaw Wines, tasting small-batch wines straight from the barrel. Just make sure you bring an extra suitcase (or make sure you have the extra boot space) so you can stock up on not just bottles of wine, but also cheese, jam, and honey from the local farmers markets.

Pro tip: Book directly with local makers and farmers. By doing so, you can potentially even tailor your accommodation to suit your family. For instance, if you’re travelling with some camping gear or even with an RV or caravan, your hosts may allow you to sleep out under the stars and snag a discount on your accommodation.

4. Explore NSW’s Underrated Coastal Towns

While a weekend away in Byron Bay is rarely a poor choice, the NSW coastline has many lesser-known seaside towns that will more than suffice for a respite from the daily grind. Towns like Bundeena, South West Rocks, and Yamba, to name a few. Relaxed pace, relaxed charm, and scenery to decorate the finest postcard.

Again, taking this trip will give you the freedom to visit all these places (if you take enough time, that is). Plus, you won’t be anchored by bookings and check-out times. Places like these all have brilliant caravan parks, almost always within walking distance of the beach. Fancy ocean breezes and seafood fresh from the trawlers? Look no further.

5. Avoca Beach: A little closer to home

Of course, you don’t have to journey for hours to feel the weight lift from your shoulders. Avoca Beach, a suburb of the Central Coast, is only an hour away, and it might be just what you need. To the uninitiated, Avoca is similar in aesthetic to the suburbs of Sydney’s northern beaches. Only you’re not in Sydney.

Like other destinations on this list, Avoca has all the things you need to take a moment’s respite. Crisp coastal mornings, cafes that meet your relaxed rhythm, and beer gardens with sunset views of the surf. Add it all up and you have the recipe for a staycation that doesn’t try to be memorable, but ends up being anyway.

6. Kangaroo Valley: The Escape You Didn’t Know You Needed

If you’ve ever wished you could hit pause on the noise of everyday life, Kangaroo Valley might just be your reset button. Just a couple of hours south of Sydney, this lush little pocket feels worlds away – the kind of place where the loudest sound is birdsong, and even your phone seems to relax a bit.

Framed by forested hills and fed by a winding river, Kangaroo Valley is perfect for doing absolutely nothing, or a whole lot of something, depending on your mood. Paddle down the Kangaroo River, hike the trails of Morton National Park, or just sit on a porch with a cup of something warm and stare at trees like it’s your job. Cabins, cottages, campsites – they all come with that fresh, damp-earth smell that tells you you’ve officially left the city behind.

And when you do decide to wander, the local village has everything you need: fresh bread, friendly faces, and a pub that knows how to do a decent Sunday roast. In short, it’s all the charm of the countryside, minus the long haul.

Escape the City Without Leaving the State

One of the often-overlooked benefits of living in Sydney is that you don’t have to go far to escape the chaos. When it comes to destinations for refreshing, we’re spoilt for choice in NSW; no amount of counterargument will dispel this fact. And we have everything. Country vineyards, coastal towns, and quiet bush cabins – just take your pick and let the pressure valve off.

Before you head off, it’s worth planning a few things to make the most of your time away. Mid-week stays can offer a little more peace and fewer crowds, and if you’re venturing somewhere remote (where phone reception starts to fade and stars begin to show), downloading your maps ahead of time can save you the hassle. You might also want to leave a little room in the boot. With farmgate stalls, local wine, and markets scattered along the way, it’s almost impossible to return home empty-handed.

However you choose to staycation, the best ones usually have the same ingredients: slow mornings, open skies, and that quiet realisation that you didn’t need to go far to feel far away.
