Police believe the body of a woman found at Werrington today had been in bushland “for some time”.
Officers attached to Nepean Police Area Command were called to a reserve off Irwin Street at Werrington about 1.15pm.
A crime scene has been established and an investigation has commenced by Nepean detectives, who are being assisted by the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad. A Strike Force has also been formed.
A canvass of the area was conducted by local police, assisted by PolAir.
“The area of the reserve in question is quite isolated, so it appears the body has been there for a period of time without discovery,” said Nepean Police Area Commander, Detective Inspector Trent King.
Clothing items and rubbish were found around the body, King confirmed. He would not confirm whether the woman was clothed or unclothed.
“It was a passer-by that found the body. They located it from a distance and called 000,” he said.
“We’re in the infancy of this investigation. The scene is currently being examined so I don’t have any details around injuries at this stage.”
It is believed the deceased woman was middle-aged. Police are working with the Missing Persons Unit to identify any woman who they ay be able to link to the case.
“We’re hoping in the next couple of days through both the post-mortem examination as well as the examination today that we will have further information,” King said.
“Until we identify the cause of death, a death is unexplained and certainly in this circumstance we feel it necessary to take it to the highest level.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
