Improvements ahead for laneways in St Marys

St Marys laneways are the focus of improvements.

Penrith City Council has approved works on privately owned laneways in St Marys to install lighting improvements and renew an existing public artwork.

The laneway connecting Queen Street to West Lane will receive the installation of lighting elements to improve amenities, encourage wayfinding, connect to parking, increase safety and further town activation.

“This walkway provides an important link to Queen Street and supports afterhours access to the car park in West Lane,” a Council report said.

“The pedestrian laneways are distinct from the streetscape with a focus on the movement of people rather than vehicles.

“The site was identified for lighting enhancements due to its value in connecting people with Queen Street businesses.”

The laneway connecting Queen Street to East Lane currently has a preexisting mural that will be removed to make way for a new mural to be installed in the near future.

“The opportunity to renew the existing public artwork in East Lane, St Marys, has arisen as the current mural has become worn and in need of revitalisation,” the Council report said.

“Public art plays a crucial role in enhancing the urban environment, fostering community pride, and creating a visually engaging streetscape.”
