Retailers across the country are closing early with a catastrophic global IT event bringing down systems and forcing businesses to a halt.

A failure attributed to a major software solution, Crowdstrike, is behind the problem. An update rolled out just before 3pm Australian time is the root cause of the issue.

Everything from supermarkets to petrol stations, pubs, banks, ATMs and broadcasters are impacted.

Woolworths said in a statement: “Some of our stores and other facilities have been impacted as a result of the global IT issue. We thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Some TV networks are back on air using technologies not impacted by the problem. Radio 2GB is on air but unable to broadcast ads or take calls.

Foxtel is currently down.

Sydney Airport is also impacted.

“A global technical outage has impacted some airline operations and terminal services,” a spokesperson said.

“Flights are currently arriving and departing however there may be some delays throughout the evening.

“We have activated our contingency plans with our airline partners and deployed additional staff to our terminals to assist passengers.

“Anyone travelling today should leave plenty of time to come to the airport and check with their airline regarding the status of their flight.”

Sporting events such as the NRL will go ahead tonight, but broadcasters are scrambling to get matches to air.
