St Marys residents Marjorie and Graham Elphick say they are humbled to be nominated for the NSW Grandparents of the Year Awards.
The awards recognise the contribution of grandparents and older residents to their local communities with Mr and Mrs Elphick nominated for the award by their local neighbourhood centre.
The duo, in their 70s, have been instrumental in the St Marys area for the past 45 years, have been married for 53 years, have 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren ranging from the ages of two-years-old to 30-years-old, and have volunteered at St Marys North Public School for the past 20 years.
Mrs Elphick also facilitates the neighbourhood Women’s Senior’s group, which works on various projects, including knitting children’s jumpers to be sent to Africa.
“Being a grandparent as well as the volunteer work we do is what helps keep us both young,” Mrs Elphick said.
The pair also run the breakfast club at the school.
The NSW Grandparents of the Year Awards will be held on October 25.
