Putting books together

Budding authors aged 9 to 12 will learn how books are put together from first idea to publication in the holidays. They’ll get to make and take home their very own book!

This great value program, part of a new series, Kids at the Corner 2012, will be offered from April to September this year and covers writing, illustrating, cartooning, book-making and photography.

Kids at the Corner is an initiative of the St Marys Corner Community and Cultural Precinct, which Penrith City Council owns and runs. The Story Makers program is a collaborative project with WestWords allowing local children in Western Sydney to work with literature professionals through a colourful artistic program.

Penrith City Mayor Greg Davies said: “More than 300 children took part in last year’s creative programs for local children at St Marys Corner which Council ran in collaboration with different local and regional children services and projects.

“This year’s program will take ‘family’ as the broad theme over the three 2012 school holidays. At the end of the year’s program, a book of children’s stories, poetry, drawings, cartoons and photographs will be published. Each family taking part in the program will receive a complimentary copy of the publication, with extra copies available for sale.”

WestWords – the Western Sydney Young People’s Literature Development Project – encourages children and young people in greater Western Sydney to read for pleasure and creative expression. Well known authors, illustrators and literature professionals facilitate their diverse range of activities and workshops.

WestWords’ philosophy for the project is that by allowing young people to voice their stories and experiences, this can have the power to change lives and communities.

To enrol your child in the program’s five sessions costs $25 or a single session just $5. Places are limited, so bookings are essential. To book, visit St Marys Library for an enrolment form, fill it in and hand it with your payment to the library counter.
