Contamination fears

Residents in Jamisontown are living adjacent to land potentially contaminated with cancer causing chemicals, but they may not even be aware.

The land at the Seven Eleven petrol station on Mulgoa Road was classified as contaminated by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) on February 3.

But a fortnight has now passed and residents have not been informed.

“This is completely unacceptable – if there is a contaminated site right next door to their homes, Jamisontown residents have a right to know,” said Penrith Councillor, Prue Guillaume.

The contamination is due to leaking fuel from underground storage tanks.

Nearby resident, Robin Robinson, said she is concerned for her own property.

“If the land across the road is contaminated and they are testing by drilling wells out the front of my property, is there a chance my land is contaminated?” she asked.

A spokeswoman said the OEH did not believe the site posed a “significant risk” to human health.

Councillor Guillaume is calling for an immediate briefing for residents to keep them informed of any updates.
