Students at McCarthy Catholic College in Emu Plains will be given an insight into the world of newspapers over the coming months after partnering with The Western Weekender.
The school is the first to go through the Weekender’s ‘newspapers in schools’ program, which aims to inform students about the medium of newspapers and help educate them on the happenings in their local area.
Students will hear from Weekender staff regularly and will utilise the Weekender in the classroom for various case studies and other work.
Weekender Editor, Troy Dodds, spoke to the students on Tuesday morning.
“It is very important that young people become engaged with the news of their area, and engaged with how they receive that news,” he said.
The students involved in the program are part of the school’s media team, which is run by teacher Keith Heggart.
“It is a great opportunity for our school and community to work together, and the students will develop valuable, real-world skills and experiences from being involved,” he said.
“The media team students are thrilled at learning from people involved in industry.”
