Major fire breaks out in St Marys

More than 100 firefighters are currently responding to a large structure fire at a commercial recycling plant on Christie Street, St Marys.

At 1.48pm multiple triple zero calls were received about a large fire, gas bottles exploding and thick black smoke in the area.

20 fire trucks carrying 100 firefighters are currently responding to the fire.

Firefighters will work to contains the fire to stop it from spreading to adjoining properties and unaffected gas cylinders.

There is significant fire activity with flames reaching 60 metres in height.

Ongoing explosions and stores of chemicals are making it an extremely dangerous and complex situation.

Firefighters, including Hazardous Materials crew, are working to contain the fire, protecting the adjoining properties and ensuring all individuals are encountered for.

Emergency services have established an 800 metres exclusion zone and evacuations are underway.

Residents and businesses outside the exclusion zone are advised to keep doors, windows and events closed to due potential smoke.

There are significant traffic delays in the immediate area.
