Tropical and freshwater fish valued at thousands of dollars have died after a pet shop was vandalised at Emu Plains overnight.

Fire & Rescue NSW officers were called to the Great Western Highway about 9.45pm on Monday and extinguished a blaze inside a pet store.

When the scene was inspected, police found the business had been broken into and dozens of fish tanks had been smashed, killing hundreds of exotic and pet fish.

Police have been told one tank alone contained fish valued at $10,000.

A crime scene has been established while officers from Nepean Police Area Command conduct further inquiries.
