Penrith’s best hope for a Commonwealth Games medal has been sensationally withdrawn from competition due to an injury.

Local boxer Daniel Lewis, who performed strongly as expected in his opening few bouts, was ruled out of his quarter final battle with India’s Mandeep Jangra due to a cut.

The fight was due to take place on this morning, but doctors won’t let Lewis fight with the injury.

The 20-year-old, who competes in the 69kg Men’s Welter Weight class, won his first fight with a TKO against Sierra Leone’s Mohamed Sillah last Saturday.

The Londonderry resident then backed it up on Tuesday morning with another huge win over Nigeria’s Kehinde Ademuyowa in the Round of 16.
