A woman has died following a serious crash in Emu Plains.

About 7.15pm yesterday, emergency services were called to the M4 at Emu Plains after a black Toyota Prado left the road and collided with a pylon.

The male driver and his female passenger – both aged 37 – were treated at the scene before they were airlifted to Westmead Hospital.

The woman died a short time ago.

The man remains in a critical condition.

Officers attached to Penrith Local Area Command, and the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit, continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

They’re appealing for anyone who witnessed it, or the events leading up to it, to come forward.

It is still not known whether another vehicle was involved.

The M4’s citybound lanes were closed for several hours while police investigated, with a rescue helicopter landing on the freeway.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Penrith Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
