A man has been charged following an alleged act of animal cruelty at South Penrith.
About midday today, a member of the public saw a man punching his dog to the face after placing him in a headlock.
The man allegedly continued to punch and kick the dog, a six-month-old Staffordshire Terrier, causing him to yelp.
The male witness attempted to intervene; however, the dog’s owner allegedly made repeated threats towards him.
Police were called and officers from Penrith Local Area Command attended and commenced inquiries.
A 36-year-old man was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with cruelty to an animal and intimidation.
He’s been given bail to appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday 21 September 2015.
Police officers seized the dog and took him to a vet for assessment. He is currently in the care of an animal welfare organisation.
Investigators will seek an order from the court regarding the future care of the dog.
