Man arrested after sledge hammer attack

A man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a man with a sledge hammer during a home invasion in St Marys today.

Just after 10.30am, emergency services were called to a home on Putland Street, St Marys, after reports of an assault.

“Police have been told the offender forced his way into the home and assaulted the occupant with a sledge hammer,” a Police spokesperson said.

The occupant, a 35-year-old man, was treated for facial injuries and taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

A 40-year-old man was arrested and taken to Nepean Hospital for treatment after severing the tip of his finger in the altercation. He remains in hospital under police guard.

Officers from Nepean Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene.

Inquiries are continuing.
