Penrith is preparing for a weekend heatwave with temperatures above 40 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday.

Locals are being urged to be prepared especially when it comes to the elderly, children and pets.

The weather will warm up tomorrow with a top of 37 degrees in Penrith, before it reaches 42 on Saturday.

Sunday will be the hottest day with a top temperature of 45 degrees predicted.

It will fall just short of Penrith’s record temperature of 46.5 degrees set on January 18 last year.

It’ll also be hot on Monday – when many people return to work for the year – with a top of 39 predicted. Rain will come later in the day and bring with it a cool change for the rest of the week.
