A man is in custody at Penrith Police Station after allegedly assaulting a female police officer in Penrith today.

Around 12.30pm today, police were called to Illawong Avenue, Penrith, after residents raised concerns about a man who was shouting loudly in Stewarts Park.

Two police officers – a female senior constable and a male constable, both aged in their late 20s – attended the location and spoke to a man who was allegedly behaving in an erratic manner in the park.

The man allegedly assaulted the female officer, punching her in the head, before the officers were forced to deploy OC spray and arrest the man.

Ambulance paramedics arrived at the location a short time later and attended to the officers. The female officer sustained minor cuts and bruising to her face while the male officer was treated due to being affected by the OC spray.

Neither officer required hospitalisation and both have returned to duty at Penrith Police Station.

The arrested man, aged 28, was also taken to Penrith Police Station where he remains in custody. He is expected to be charged with assaulting a police officer.
